Before you write
These help us find the problem quickly:
- Your iPhone or iPad model and iOS version.
- Scout's firmware version, under Settings → Scout.
- What you did, what you expected, and what happened instead.
- If it's about how Scout behaves, a usage report: Settings → Usage Report → Send by Email. It shows how you use Scout, never what you record, and you can read it first.
Common questions
The app doesn't see my Scout
Plug Scout straight into the USB-C port on your iPhone or iPad, not through a hub. Within a few seconds the player at the bottom of the app says Connected. If it says Not responding, unplug Scout and plug it back in.
How do I get recordings onto my iPhone?
Tap Sync in the player at the bottom. Scout switches to disk mode (its light turns cyan) and the app copies everything new from the memory card.
The first time you sync a card, iOS asks you to choose it. Pick the drive itself, not a folder on it. After that, the app remembers the card.
Does syncing delete recordings from Scout?
No. Syncing only copies. You decide when recordings leave the card in Settings → Sync → Delete from Scout: when you choose, after every sync, or never, so the card stays a second copy.
Transcripts or titles don't appear
Transcripts need iOS 26 or later. The first time you transcribe a recording in a new language, iOS downloads that language once. To transcribe every recording as it syncs, turn on Settings → Transcription → Transcribe automatically.
Titles come from Apple Intelligence, so they need a device that supports it, with Apple Intelligence turned on. You can switch titles off under Settings → Transcription → Name recordings.
A recording says "Can't decrypt"
It's on a card that was encrypted with a key this device doesn't have. Keys are kept in your iCloud Keychain, so your other iPhones and iPads with the same Apple Account have them too. Without the key, the recording can't be opened. You can export your keys under Settings → Encryption.
I deleted a recording by mistake
Open Recently Deleted. Recordings stay there for 30 days, and Recover puts them back.
How do I update Scout's firmware?
The app carries the latest firmware. When Scout runs an older version, Settings shows a red badge on Scout's row. Open it and tap Update, and keep Scout plugged in until it's back. Nothing installs on its own.
How much recording time is left?
Settings → Memory card shows the time left at the current recording quality. Scout also warns you when about five minutes remain.
Can I use my recordings without the app?
Yes. Unless they're encrypted, recordings are plain WAV files on the memory card. Put the card in any card reader, or use disk mode, and open them on a computer.
Privacy
The app collects nothing and never goes online. Read the app privacy policy.
