Firmware update

The Scout app updates Scout for you. Without the app, install the latest firmware from here.

Latest firmware

firmware.uf2 · 0.13.0 · 501 KB
Older versions: 0.12.0 · 0.11.0 · 0.10.0
Download firmware.uf2

How to install it

  1. Hold Scout's button while you plug it into a computer. The memory card shows up as a drive. A card reader works too.
  2. Download firmware.uf2 above. Copy it to the SCOUT folder on the card and rename it UPDATE.UF2.
  3. Press Scout's button, or put the card back in. Scout restarts, the light flashes red and green while it installs, and Scout deletes the file when it's done.

Updating the firmware doesn't touch your recordings.

If Scout doesn't start

Scout has a firmware update button for when the firmware is too broken to read the card.

  1. Find the button. If your Scout has a small hole next to the microSD slot, the button is behind it, and a paperclip reaches it. If not, open the case: the button is the small push button on the board, not the one under Scout's own button.
  2. Hold it in while you plug Scout into a computer. Scout shows up as a USB drive.
  3. Drag firmware.uf2 onto that drive. Scout restarts by itself with the new firmware.

What's new

0.13.0 25 October 2026

  • Scout keeps count of how it's used, like hours recorded and how recordings end. If you like, you can send us a usage report from the app; nothing is sent unless you do.

0.12.0 22 October 2026

  • Each recording now remembers when it started, so the app shows the right date and time for it.
  • Scout sets its clock from your phone when the app connects. With the updated hardware, Scout keeps the time even while unplugged.
  • With the updated hardware, Scout copies recordings to a computer about twenty times faster in USB storage mode.

0.11.0 20 October 2026

  • With the app, you can delete recordings from Scout that haven't been synced yet.
  • Syncing is about a fifth faster.
  • If something goes wrong inside Scout, it restarts by itself instead of freezing until you unplug it.

0.10.0 19 October 2026

  • New mode, Passthrough: Scout records nothing and plays your phone's sound in stereo. A double click switches between Auto, Manual and Passthrough.

0.9.1 19 October 2026

  • Erasing the memory card no longer leaves Scout stuck with a red light.

0.9.0 19 October 2026

  • In manual mode, a recording you stop within 2 seconds is deleted, so a press by mistake leaves nothing behind.

0.8.0 17 October 2026

  • The app shows which memory card is in Scout: its maker, model, size and speed class.
  • If the memory card has trouble while recording, Scout tries again, and the app tells you.

0.7.0 17 October 2026

  • Scout keeps its own settings, so they stay the same whatever memory card is in. Recording quality stays with each card.
  • Change Scout's settings without a memory card, and reset them from the app.
  • Without the app, you can still change a setting by writing it on the memory card. Scout takes it over when it starts.

0.6.0 17 October 2026

  • Scout can encrypt recordings on the memory card, so only your own devices can open them. Turn it on in the app.
  • In automatic mode, a double-click now switches to manual mode without starting a recording.
  • Fewer small clicks in recordings.

0.5.0 16 October 2026

  • The app shows how much recording time is left on the memory card.

0.4.0 16 October 2026

  • Scout gives every recording its own ID, so the app knows exactly what's been synced. That's what lets the app safely delete recordings from Scout.
  • The app shows what's on Scout's memory card faster.
  • No more bright green flash when Scout starts.
  • Letting go of the button after plugging Scout in as a drive no longer switches it straight back to recording.

0.3.0 15 October 2026

  • Far fewer gaps in recordings on slower memory cards.
  • Choose the recording quality in the app. A lower quality saves space on the memory card.
  • Change Scout's settings in the app instead of editing a file on the memory card.
  • Click the button once to leave disk mode and go back to recording. Handy on iPhone, which can't eject a drive.
  • Update Scout's firmware from the app.
  • The app tells you if Scout lost a moment of audio in a recording.

0.2.0 14 October 2026

  • Scout works with the Scout app: see what's on the memory card, start and stop recording, and sync recordings to your iPhone.
  • When the app plays a recording through Scout, Scout doesn't record it again.
